This is definitely far grimmer than the earlier books. In the previous books, the grim fact Donna and Jack kill people for a living is toned down with humor and some drama. That changes noticeably in this book. I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil the book for anyone other than to just say be prepared for something different. Also, if new to the series, it will be much easier to follow what is happening in this book if you read the others first (Ms. Brown does provide a quick synopsis at the back of this book of each the books the characters in this books originally appeared in and why the characters are in this book but I do not recommend reading them first. If you haven't read the other books already, read them first and you will enjoy this one much more.Also, each chapter is loosely themed on a hit song (no particular genre) which is mentioned at the start of the chapters before Donna's usual relationship and assassination tips.One bit of levity that has run through the series that I picked up on (there may be more I missed) are the names of her husband, Jack Craig, and her boss Ryan Clancy. They sound suspiciously like they were "borrowed" from the Jack Ryan books by Tom Clancy (along with the author's name). Donna's name in the first book is Donna Stone, the name of the perfect housewife in the old Donna Reed show, and her first husband's name in the first book (he also appears in later books) is Carl Stone. The actor who played Donna Stone's husband in the old Donna Reed show was Carl Betz.In this book, the name of the shrink Donna has to be evaluated by is right out of I Love Jeannie. I almost fell out of bed laughing when I read it. If you want to know the name, read the book.
